How to run a tryout that scores itself
The fastest, fairest tryouts are built around stations and a clock. Split players into small groups and rotate them through fixed stations — hitting, fielding, throwing, and timed running — so everyone gets identical reps. Put one or two evaluators on each station for the whole session; consistency between reps matters far more than a perfect eye. Score each player right after their reps, while the read is fresh.
Making scoring fair
- Keep the 1–5 descriptors visible so a “3” means the same thing to everyone.
- Have the same evaluator handle the same station all day to remove station-to-station drift.
- Use tryout numbers, not names, on the field to reduce bias toward familiar players.
- For timed events, decide in advance where the clock starts and stops and stick to it.
- When two coaches disagree by two or more points on a skill, the results table flags it — treat those as a prompt to re-watch, not an automatic average.
When you are done, the lineup generator and positions guide help you turn the ranked list into a roster and a defensive plan.
