The four types of periods
Contact period
Coaches may have in-person contact with recruits and their families both on and off campus, watch you compete, and communicate freely (within other rules).
Evaluation period
Coaches may watch you play or visit your school to assess you, but may not have in-person conversations off campus.
Quiet period
Coaches may only have in-person contact on their own campus. No off-campus contact or evaluation is allowed.
Dead period
No in-person contact or evaluation at all. Coaches can still call and write. Visits must happen at other times.
How to use the calendar
Plan campus visits and camps for contact or evaluation periods when coaches can see you or meet you, and avoid expecting in-person contact during quiet and dead periods. Remember that phone calls and emails are governed by separate rules and are often allowed even in dead periods.
Division II, Division III and NAIA have their own calendars and are generally more flexible than Division I. Always check the calendar for the specific division you're targeting.
