How it works
Total bases = singles + 2×doubles + 3×triples + 4×home runs. Slugging percentage is total bases divided by at-bats. Because it rewards extra-base hits, two players with the same batting average can have very different slugging percentages.
Worked example
A hitter with 30 singles, 9 doubles, 1 triple, and 5 home runs has 30 + 18 + 3 + 20 = 71 total bases. In 160 at-bats that's 71 ÷ 160 = .444.
